Cold laser is a relatively new therapy that has awesome promise for those suffering from chronic, intractable pain. (Intractable means that the pain does not respond to other therapies, is resistant to treatments that should relieve it.)
Cold laser is a light, produced by an instrument at a wavelength that has specific characteristics:
- It penetrates soft tissues to reach up to 3 inches into the affected area
- It does not produce heat (this is referring to Class III lasers)
- It stimulates cells into a healing mode by making the mitochondria do their job with more efficiency
This light, focused painlessly into the inflamed tissues, results in healing of several sources of pain, including:
- Scar tissues
- Sprained joints
- Chronic painful tissues
- Fibromyalgia, and more.
We use Class 3 laser at Delta Chiropractic Center.
Some advocate for Class 4 laser. But Class 4 is significantly stronger, produces too much heat, and I’ve seen research that would indicate that Class 4 is too strong – blowing through tissues and overwhelming the fragile mitochondria that we need to do their jobs just right. Nope – Class 3 is just the right level of penetration, stimulation, and healing.
Typically, a series of 8 sessions (of about 5 minutes on each area) is used to get a good start on the healing process. We have had good reports from our patients who are using our system.
